Getting Around Muğla: Buses, Dolmuş, Airport Transfers and What Actually Works
Muğla isn't really one destination — it's a province that stretches across Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, Datça and Ölüdeniz, each with its own bay and its own crowd. There's no single tram or metro tying it together. Instead you're working with municipal buses, cash-only dolmuş minibuses, a couple of ferries, and shuttle buses from two separate airports on opposite ends of the region.
Muğla Kart and Payment Options
Fares here are distance-based rather than flat. You pay with a Muğla Kart, a contactless bank card, or a single-use ticket — cash isn't accepted on the municipal blue and yellow buses.
• Inner-city base fare (0–10 km): about 36 TRY (around €0.95) with a Muğla Kart.
• Contactless bank card: about 50 TRY (around €1.30) for a short hop — noticeably more than the card.
• Longer district routes: priced by distance, so the fare climbs the further you go.
Where to buy and top up: kiosks at the main bus terminals (Otogar) in Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Menteşe (Muğla city center), or the Muğla Kart mobile app if you'd rather skip the physical card.
From the Airport into the City
Muğla has two international airports at opposite ends of the province, and they're over two hours apart by road — so it's worth double-checking which one your flight actually lands at before you plan anything.
Milas-Bodrum Airport (BJV)
• MUTTAŞ and HAVAŞ shuttles: direct to Bodrum Otogar and to Menteşe (Muğla center), about 45 minutes.
• Official taxis: available 24/7 right outside arrivals.
• Pre-booked private transfers: a chauffeured minivan straight to the peninsula's resort bays — Yalıkavak, Türkbükü, Torba, Turgutreis — good for families, groups, or a lot of luggage.
Dalaman Airport (DLM)
• MUTTAŞ and HAVAŞ shuttles: run to Fethiye Otogar, Marmaris Otogar, and Datça, taking anywhere from about 60 to 90 minutes depending on where you're headed.
• Official taxis: metered yellow taxis at both domestic and international arrivals.
• Pre-booked private transfers: fixed-route shuttles to Göcek, Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Marmaris.
Municipal Buses vs. Local Dolmuş
These cover different ground, and it helps to know which one you actually need.
• Municipal buses (MUTTAŞ / BB): take a Muğla Kart or contactless bank card, run along the main arterial roads and airport routes, and stop only at official stops. Base fare is about 36 TRY (€0.95).
• Local dolmuş: cash only, or occasionally a Muğla Kart, running about 36–50 TRY (€0.95–1.30) depending on the route. These are the ones that actually reach the beaches and resort bays — Yalıkavak, Turgutreis, Ölüdeniz — and you can flag them down or ask to be let off pretty much anywhere along the main road, not just at fixed stops.
Taxis
Yellow taxis run on regulated digital meters, and the driver is required to switch the meter on at departure. No extra charges for luggage or extra passengers are allowed on top of the metered fare.
• Starting fee: about 150 TRY (€3.90)
• Per kilometer: about 50 TRY (€1.30)
• Minimum short-hop fare (indi-bindi): about 250 TRY (€6.50)
Uber operates in Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye, but like elsewhere in Turkey it just dispatches the same licensed yellow taxis rather than private drivers. Taxis take cash in TRY or EUR, and some take card — worth confirming with the driver first.
Getting to the Beaches and Resort Areas
• Bodrum center to Yalıkavak, Turgutreis or Gümbet: local dolmuş from the underground Bodrum Otogar, about 45–75 TRY (€1.15–1.95).
• Marmaris to İçmeler Beach: the orange-striped Marmaris–İçmeler dolmuş along the coastal boulevard, about 40 TRY (€1.05).
• Fethiye center to Ölüdeniz (Blue Lagoon) and Hisarönü: the Fethiye–Ölüdeniz dolmuş from the central station or Fethiye Otogar, about 65 TRY (€1.70).
• Fethiye to Kayaköy (the ghost village): the Fethiye–Kayaköy dolmuş from the center, about 55 TRY (€1.40).
Traveling Between Districts: Bodrum, Marmaris, Datça and Fethiye
• Bodrum to Datça by ferry: the passenger and car ferry across the Gulf of Gökova is the most direct route — about 2 hours, roughly 450 TRY (€11.60) per foot passenger. It fills up fast in peak summer, so book ahead online.
• Marmaris to Datça by road: regional minibuses run the length of the Datça peninsula from Marmaris Otogar, about 180 TRY (€4.65).
• Marmaris to Fethiye: intercity coaches between the two Otogars, about 250–320 TRY (€6.50–8.30).
A Few Things I'd Tell a Friend
• Double-check your airport. BJV and DLM are both in Muğla but more than two hours apart by road — landing at the wrong assumption costs real time.
• Your Istanbulkart or AntalyaKart won't work here. You'll need a Muğla Kart, a contactless bank card on the buses, or cash on the dolmuş.
• Carry cash for the beach dolmuş. Municipal buses take card, but the minibuses that actually reach Yalıkavak, Turgutreis or Ölüdeniz are mostly cash.
• Book the Bodrum–Datça ferry ahead in summer. It's the most direct way across the Gulf of Gökova and it fills up.
• Nightlife towns run later. In peak summer, dolmuş to Gümbet/Yalıkavak and to İçmeler can run until 2 or 4 a.m.; off-season, service usually stops by around 23:00.
FAQ
Can I use an Istanbulkart or AntalyaKart in Muğla?
No, transit cards from other cities don't work here. You can tap a foreign contactless bank card on the municipal buses, use a Muğla Kart, or pay cash on the local dolmuş.
How do I get from Bodrum Airport to Yalıkavak or Turgutreis?
Take the MUTTAŞ or HAVAŞ shuttle to Bodrum Otogar, then transfer to a local dolmuş heading to Yalıkavak or Turgutreis — or just take an airport taxi straight there.
Does public transport run late in the resort areas?
In peak summer, dolmuş lines in Bodrum (toward Gümbet/Yalıkavak) and Marmaris (toward İçmeler) can run until 2 or 4 a.m. Off-season, expect service to stop by around 23:00.
